Get the return filed — with the whole tax position understood.
Britvex helps individuals, landlords, sole traders, directors and clients with overseas or untaxed income prepare and file UK Self Assessment returns using the records and information relevant to their actual circumstances.
Start with why Self Assessment applies to you.
Not everyone needs a tax return. HMRC’s rules depend on the income, gains, business activity and other circumstances that applied during the tax year.
Sole Traders
If your gross sole-trader income was more than £1,000 before expenses, Self Assessment can be required.
Discuss sole-trader return →Landlords
Rental income from property or land can create a Self Assessment reporting requirement depending on your circumstances.
Landlord Tax →Directors & Shareholders
A directorship by itself does not automatically mean a return is required, but dividends, untaxed income and other factors can make one necessary.
Discuss your position →Capital Gains & Investment Income
Disposals, gains, dividends, savings interest or other investment income can affect whether a return is needed and what must be reported.
Capital Gains Tax →Foreign or Overseas Income
Foreign income and taxable UK income for non-UK residents can create Self Assessment requirements depending on the facts.
Non-Resident Tax →Untaxed Income or HMRC Requirement
Partnership income, certain charges, untaxed income or an HMRC notice to file can also bring you into Self Assessment.
Check your situation →A better return starts with complete information.
The exact records depend on your sources of income and claims. Britvex requests the information relevant to your return rather than giving every client the same generic checklist.
PAYE income and tax information
Employment income, tax deducted, benefits and other employment-related information where relevant.
Business income and expenses
Records supporting turnover, allowable business costs and other relevant sole-trader information.
Rental income and property costs
Property income, eligible expenditure and supporting records for the relevant tax year.
Interest, dividends and disposals
Statements and transaction information needed to report taxable investment income or relevant gains.
Foreign income and overseas information
Relevant overseas income, tax paid abroad and residency-related information where it affects the UK return.
Reliefs, contributions and supporting evidence
Information for claims or reliefs that are relevant to your individual circumstances.
Collect → Prepare → Review → File.
The return should move through a clear sequence so you know what information is still needed, what is being reported and what happens before submission.
Bring together the tax-year information.
We identify the relevant income sources, records, supporting documents and questions for your circumstances.
Build the return from the underlying information.
The return is prepared using the tax information and records supplied for the applicable year.
Understand the return before submission.
Check the reported position, tax calculation and any outstanding points before authorising filing.
Submit and keep the outcome connected.
Once approved, the return can be filed and the relevant tax-payment position communicated to you.
Self Assessment is not just “enter income and press submit.”
The tax return brings together the income, gains, deductions and claims that apply to the individual for the year. That is why Britvex focuses on the complete position rather than treating one document as the entire return.
The deadline is January. The sensible time to start is earlier.
For the tax year from 6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026, the main current Self Assessment dates are:
Your tax return may point to another service.
Self Assessment often overlaps with property, capital gains, overseas income or wider tax planning. Keep the connected issue with the same relationship where appropriate.
Landlord Tax
Rental income, property expenses and the individual’s wider Self Assessment position.
Landlord Tax →Capital Gains Tax
Support where asset disposals or gains need to be considered alongside the return.
Capital Gains Tax →Non-Resident Tax
UK tax reporting where the individual is based overseas or has cross-border income.
Non-Resident Tax →Tax Planning
Forward-looking tax support where a future transaction or change in circumstances needs consideration.
Tax Planning →Living abroad does not automatically remove UK tax reporting.
Non-UK residents can still have taxable UK income and may need a UK tax return. Foreign income can also be relevant depending on residence and the individual’s circumstances. Britvex can review the UK reporting side of the position.
Your tax work should have a clear route back to your accountant.
Britvex connects onboarding, documents, tax work and client communication through a professional UK practice and secure portal.
Before you file your Self Assessment return.
These are general starting points. Your actual filing obligation and tax position depend on your circumstances.
What tax year is currently being filed?
The current standard filing cycle is for the 2025–26 tax year, which ran from 6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026. The online filing deadline is 31 January 2027.
When do I need to tell HMRC that I need Self Assessment?
If you need to complete a return for the previous tax year and are not already correctly registered, HMRC says you must normally tell them by 5 October. For the 2025–26 cycle, that date is 5 October 2026.
Do all company directors need to file a tax return?
No. Being a director by itself does not automatically create a Self Assessment filing requirement. Other income, dividends, gains, an HMRC notice to file or other circumstances may still require a return.
I am employed and tax is deducted through PAYE. Could I still need a return?
Yes. PAYE does not automatically cover other untaxed income, property income, certain gains or other circumstances that may need Self Assessment reporting.
Can I file before January?
Yes. HMRC allows the return to be submitted after the end of the tax year. Filing earlier can give you more time to understand the tax due and plan for payment.
When do I pay the tax?
The standard Self Assessment payment deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year. Your calculation may also include other amounts or future payments depending on your circumstances.
Can Britvex help if I live outside the UK?
Yes, where you have relevant UK tax reporting or a Self Assessment requirement. The exact treatment depends on residence, income sources and the underlying facts.
Do not wait until January to find out what your return needs.
Start with the income and records you have now. Britvex can identify the remaining information, prepare the return, review the tax position with you and keep the filing connected to your wider UK tax needs.
