Living outside the UK does not mean every UK tax obligation disappears.
Britvex helps overseas individuals understand the UK tax reporting connected to UK property, UK-source income, disposals and other UK interests — starting with residence status and then identifying which UK connections still matter.
Non-resident tax starts with the UK income, asset or activity that remains.
Different UK connections create different reporting questions. Britvex begins with the relevant source rather than assuming that every non-resident case follows the same tax route.
UK rental income
Rental income from UK property can remain taxable in the UK while you live abroad, with the Non-resident Landlords Scheme potentially affecting how rent is paid.
Landlord Tax →UK property or land sold
Non-residents can be within UK Capital Gains Tax rules for direct and certain indirect disposals of UK property or land.
Capital Gains Tax →Other UK-source income
UK employment, pension, business or other UK-source income can need separate consideration depending on the facts and any applicable reliefs.
Self Assessment →UK company interests
Being a director, shareholder or owner of a UK company can create company, payroll or personal-tax questions that should be reviewed separately.
Overseas Founders →Do not decide residence from citizenship, a visa or one travel date.
UK tax residence is determined under the Statutory Residence Test for each tax year. HMRC’s test looks at days in the UK and, where relevant, work and other UK ties.
Spending 183 days or more in the UK makes an individual UK resident for that year, but a shorter stay does not automatically mean non-resident. The remaining tests can still matter.
Establish → Identify → Calculate → Report.
A non-resident tax review works best when residence status is separated from the UK income and gains that may still fall within the UK tax system.
Review the residence position.
Use the relevant tax-year facts and Statutory Residence Test framework to determine the UK residence starting point.
Map the UK income and assets.
Property, employment, business, pensions, gains and company interests are considered separately.
Apply the relevant UK tax treatment.
Consider allowable expenses, gains, reliefs, withheld tax and other relevant items for the UK position.
Use the correct UK filing route.
Complete the applicable Self Assessment or property-disposal reporting and keep payment deadlines visible.
The Non-resident Landlords Scheme is about how rent is paid — not whether the rent is tax-free.
Under the scheme, a UK letting agent generally has to deduct basic-rate tax from a non-resident landlord’s UK rental income unless HMRC has authorised payment without deduction. In some cases a tenant can also have responsibilities under the scheme.
Approval to receive rent without deduction does not remove the landlord’s actual UK tax liability. The property income and expenses still need to be dealt with through the relevant UK tax process.
Non-residents can still have UK Capital Gains Tax on UK property or land.
A disposal can trigger its own reporting timetable, which may arrive well before the normal Self Assessment deadline.
The UK return should contain the UK items that remain reportable.
A non-resident individual may still need Self Assessment because of UK property, other UK-source income, gains or an HMRC requirement to file.
Britvex can keep the residence position, UK income and connected reporting in one review instead of treating each UK document as a separate tax question.
Living in the UAE can change the UK residence picture — but it does not erase UK-source income.
Britvex can review the UK side for UAE-based individuals with UK property, UK income, UK companies or UK disposals.
This service does not assume that moving to the UAE automatically makes someone non-UK resident for every tax year. The UK Statutory Residence Test still needs to be considered.
Non-resident tax usually connects to a specific UK income or asset.
Keep the residence analysis connected to the property, tax return, disposal or UK business interest that created the UK reporting requirement.

Before you assume the UK tax position is finished.
These are general UK tax starting points. Residence and cross-border tax treatment depend on the specific tax year and the individual facts.
If I live outside the UK, am I automatically non-UK resident?
No. UK tax residence is determined under the Statutory Residence Test for each tax year. Days in the UK, work patterns and UK ties can all matter.
What happens if I spend 183 days or more in the UK?
HMRC’s Statutory Residence Test guidance says that an individual who is in the UK for 183 days or more in a tax year is UK resident for that year.
If I am non-resident, is my foreign income taxed in the UK?
HMRC’s general guidance says non-UK residents do not normally pay UK tax on foreign income. UK-source income and UK gains still need separate consideration.
Can UK rental income still be taxed if I live abroad?
Yes. UK rental income can remain within UK tax. The Non-resident Landlords Scheme may also require a letting agent or tenant to deduct tax unless HMRC has authorised gross payment.
Does approval to receive rent gross mean no UK tax is due?
No. Approval under the Non-resident Landlords Scheme changes whether tax is withheld from the rent. It does not by itself remove the landlord’s underlying UK tax liability.
Do non-residents pay UK Capital Gains Tax on UK property?
Non-residents can be within UK Capital Gains Tax rules on direct and certain indirect disposals of UK property or land. Relevant UK property disposals can also carry a 60-day reporting and payment deadline.
Can Britvex help UAE-based clients?
Yes. Britvex can review the UK accounting and tax side for UAE-based individuals with UK income, property, gains or business interests.
